Making Money While You Are in College

What's covered:
  • Sell textbooks
  • Sell electronics
  • Craigslist gigs
  • Participate in lab experiments/studies on UCSD campus
  • Part-time jobs on campus
This list is in somewhat an order of most probable to the least probable way of making money.

Textbooks:

After spending tons of money on used or new textbooks for your courses, you can finally make some of that money back! If you were able to find a used book at a good price then you are in luck because you can probably sell that book for nearly the same price that you bought it for. If you bought it new, then you can sell it as a used book and make some money back as well but not as much. Common places where I have had success selling textbooks: Amazon.com and Facebook Marketplace. These two places have been more than sufficient for reaching all the consumers looking for used college textbooks. I prefer Facebook Marketplace simply because I do not have to deal with the hassle of shipping, avoid selling fees, and get paid in cash since I can meet locally.

Electronics:

If you have any old electronics such as video game consoles, video games, cell phones, laptops, televisions, iPods, speakers, or anything along those lines that you don't need anymore then you can sell them on eBay.com or craigslist.org. There are a lot of information that can be found on the internet on how to properly design your eBay ads to attract buyers. The same thing goes for your Craigslist ad as well. I prefer using Craigslist whenever possible to avoid seller fees and shipping hassle. Often times there are price discrepancies on consumer electronics on eBay and Craigslist. Here is where you can make some money by buying from one source and selling it to consumers on the other source. The bigger the price difference, the bigger your gains from trade, and the less risk you have to bear from investing in the product to resell. For example, during the first month the Apple iPhone was released by AT&T, people were selling their used iPhone 3GS for an average of $220 ($150-$270) so they could upgrade to the iPhone 4. A couple months later, the prices for the iPhone 3GS went back up above $300. Local and global prices may differ so keep an eye out for these opportunities to cash in.

Craigslist gigs:

Here is another opportunity to use Craigslist to help you earn some cash. People often post certain gigs that they want done. Some examples of these gigs are tutoring in elementary to college subjects, computer assistance, babysitting, personal designated driver, yard work, house cleaning, etc. You may find a request for your labor or skill that you have acquired at some point in your life such as fixing computers or teaching kids. Maybe you have a lot of strength and can help people move furniture. You could also be a great writer that someone is looking to hire to help them write their blogs or correct their essays. Whatever your skill is, there may be a task for you so try it out and make some money while you help someone out

UCSD Lab Experiments:

I have personally done a few Economics experiments where I have been paid for my time. These are simple decision making experiments that take anywhere from 10 minutes to 2 hours and they pay well for the work you do. Typically you will make about $20 an hour from these Economics experiments but they are not too abundant. I have also participated in a vaccine experiment related to exercise and I was compensated $100 for my time for this experiment which involved 3 visits that totaled less than 3 hours. There are many other types of experiments on campus that are posted on the walls of hallways. Check them out and do one or two in between classes and make enough lunch money for the entire week!

Part-time Jobs on campus:

A part-time job on campus is a good way to earn some money while you're in college. These jobs are typically very flexible around your schedule especially if you have a midterm review that was announced a few days before you have to work. Student workers can swap shifts with each other to help each other out while helping out the employer as well. If you qualify for Work Study, then you do not get Federal taxes withdrawn from your paycheck! You can work for UCSD Housing, Dining, and Hospitality and work in the college dining halls. You get free meals and get a work schedule that works around your class schedule! You can also work in the administrative departments of the various administrations on campus. You can become a campus shuttle driver, which pays pretty well at above $12 an hour. Check our Port Triton's Career Services to find jobs on campus that you can apply for!

Saving Money on Housing

Rent:
Rent is my most costly recurring and unavoidable expenditure. This is probably true for all college students who are not living with their parents. The average cost of a single bedroom apartment in La Jolla is $1500 and the average cost of a two bedroom apartment in La Jolla is $1700 according to my own observations of rent listings on apartment websites. Here are some prices listed for several different floor plans at the following apartments:

Shea Apartment Communities

$ave!
However, you may be able to get lower monthly rates by talking to the leasing manager. Signing the lease during the off-peak seasons may also help you get lock in lower monthly rates as well. Many students will be looking for housing during the summer so this is when the housing prices will be the highest throughout the year. The best time would be cheap apartment prices would be during the winter but that also means that you will have to start living there sooner. You have to do the math to determine whether leasing the apartment early to lock in a lower price is worthwhile depending on how many months you are willing to lease the apartment.

$hare and $plit
If you do not mind sharing a bedroom with another person or two, you can definitely split the rooms! Instead of splitting the $1700 monthly rent between 2 people, you can have two doubles and split the $1700 rent amongst 4 people! That reduces your individual rent from $850 a person to $425 a person. Maybe you get a large enough living room that someone can occupy as a living room!
Bedroom within a living room!

This person will be paying less that the people who occupy the bedrooms and this additional person will help save everyone some money on the rent since the rent will be divided amongst more people.

Going home for the $ummer?
If you still have your lease but you are going back home for the summer to stay with your parents then you can sub-lease your apartment to someone else who will be staying in San Diego for summer school! That way the other person can get a temporary place to live in while you save money on rent. You can check out Facebook Marketplace to find local advertisements for people who are looking for apartments to sub-lease or post your own advertisement! sandiego.craigslist.com is also another good place for you to place an advertisement or search for people who are looking for a place to sub-lease!

Saving Money on ENTERTAINMENT!!!

What's covered in this blog?

  •  Movies
  •  Music and Books
  •  Bars and Clubs
Movies!

If you can live without watching movies then that is the most efficient way of saving money in this category. However, if you are an extreme movie lover or an occasional movie watcher then here are some tips for you to save some money.

Share- Your friends may have movies that you want to watch and you may have movies that your friends want to watch. Exchange, share, and borrow, from each other! Expand your friendship to your entire network and you should have little to no problem finding the movie you want.

Membership- If the first option is not feasible to you because your network is too small, then your other option is subscribe to a membership! NETFLIX has a membership program for $7.99 that allows you to stream an unlimited amount of movies instantly from the convenience of your home! Split the cost with your roommates or housemates and it can be $2 per month for person for a household with 4 people.

Renting- Movie rental places such as Blockbuster or redbox can also help you save money on movies. Remember to split the cost with your buddies and you'll be saving a lot of money over time.

Movie theaters- Tickets for the movie theaters are very pricey, about $10 per person, compared to the previously mentioned methods. However, if you really want to go to the theater to watch your movie, you are not completely out of luck! Check out slickdeals.net for deals for discounted Fandango and AMC movie tickets. Here is a link to a slickdeals post where they have 2 Fandango tickets for $4! Here is a link to another slickdeals post to Groupon for $4 AMC movie tickets! However, both of those deals are expired or sold out. It's good to periodically check out slickdeals.net for the latest news on discounts for many goods!

Music and Books!

Free music is the way to go! You can go on Youtube to stream almost any song you want to listen to for free. You can also use the online radio program Pandora to stream your favorite genres and songs by entering your preferences in the play list. iTunes and Amazon have music you can pay to download but Youtube and Pandora more than satisfy my music needs.

Free books to read and use temporarily can be found in several places. The library has a lot of books for students to read. At UCSD most classes have the main course book on reserves at the front desk. You can go check out these books in increments of 3 hours for free! You can also go to the campus bookstore or any bookstore and you can sit down and read the books for free!

Share books with your friends. You may have taken a class that your friend may be planning to take in the future and the other way around.

Buy used and sell when you are done with the book. Amazon has a wide selection of used books for sale. You can also check your local postings such as the "Marketplace" application on Facebook. Often times you can buy a used book for 60% of the cost of a new textbook and resell it for close to the same price you bought it for as opposed to buying a new textbook at 100% retail value and then selling it at 60% of the retail price.

Bars and Clubs!

Specials are popular among bars and clubs. Happy hour days and times vary from bar to bar. Who doesn't like half off drinks and food? Do a little research ahead of time and you can find yourself getting twice the number of drinks and twice the amount of food for the same price! You can check out my colleague Jimmy's blog Bottoms Up!  for his reviews on some of the bars in San Diego.

Get on the guestlist and avoid entrance fees to the clubs! If you are 21, then you do not really have to worry about this because most clubs will get you in for free anyways since they believe that you will most likely be spending a lot of money on their drinks. This is probably true for the majority of clubbers over 21, but you can...

PREPARTY! Save some money on drinks by prepartying! If you do not like to drink then you are already good. If you need to drink a lot to get tipsy in order to have a good time, then drink up at home or before you enter the club so you will not have to spend so much money for drinks inside the club!
