Saving Money on Housing

Rent:
Rent is my most costly recurring and unavoidable expenditure. This is probably true for all college students who are not living with their parents. The average cost of a single bedroom apartment in La Jolla is $1500 and the average cost of a two bedroom apartment in La Jolla is $1700 according to my own observations of rent listings on apartment websites. Here are some prices listed for several different floor plans at the following apartments:

However, you may be able to get lower monthly rates by talking to the leasing manager. Signing the lease during the off-peak seasons may also help you get lock in lower monthly rates as well. Many students will be looking for housing during the summer so this is when the housing prices will be the highest throughout the year. The best time would be cheap apartment prices would be during the winter but that also means that you will have to start living there sooner. You have to do the math to determine whether leasing the apartment early to lock in a lower price is worthwhile depending on how many months you are willing to lease the apartment.

$hare and $plit
If you do not mind sharing a bedroom with another person or two, you can definitely split the rooms! Instead of splitting the $1700 monthly rent between 2 people, you can have two doubles and split the $1700 rent amongst 4 people! That reduces your individual rent from $850 a person to $425 a person. Maybe you get a large enough living room that someone can occupy as a living room!
Bedroom within a living room!

This person will be paying less that the people who occupy the bedrooms and this additional person will help save everyone some money on the rent since the rent will be divided amongst more people.

If you still have your lease but you are going back home for the summer to stay with your parents then you can sub-lease your apartment to someone else who will be staying in San Diego for summer school! That way the other person can get a temporary place to live in while you save money on rent. You can check out Facebook Marketplace to find local advertisements for people who are looking for apartments to sub-lease or post your own advertisement! sandiego.craigslist.com is also another good place for you to place an advertisement or search for people who are looking for a place to sub-lease!
